MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS BOSTON
The Future of Museums: Getting It Right

Matthew Teitelbaum, Ann and Graham Gund director of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston(MFA), has done it all during his 10-year tenure at one of the world-class collections by welcoming young and more diverse audiences, centering artists as advocates for creative change, increasing viewer engagement, and keeping his lifelong goal to still unleash the power of art. Notable exhibitions under his leadership include Hear Us Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina (2023), Philip Guston Now (2022), and Gender-Bender Fashion (2019), which have all presented new curatorial scholarship and outside voices.
The MFA was the first museum in the US to employ a Curator of Provenance. Prior to his MFA position, Matthew served as the Michael and Sonja Kerner Director of the Art Gallery of Ontario. He holds a BA from Carleton University, a Master of Philosophy in modern European painting and sculpture from the Courtauld Institute of Art, and an honorary Doctor of Law from Queen’s University. He was appointed as a member of the Order of Canada in 2019.

Great Museums and You and Me: On a Humbling, Inspiring Relationship

Patrick Bringley is the New York Times best-selling author of the sublime memoir, All the Beauty in the World, reviewing his decade working as a security guard at the Met. The Associated Press called his book “hauntingly beautiful…A work of art as luminous as the old master paintings that comforted him in his grief.” Patrick performed All the Beauty in the World as a one-man play, which premiered at the Charleston Literary Festival in November, 2024. Stay tuned for more productions! Patrick holds a BA from New York University and an MA from Hunter College.

BRITISH MUSEUM
Claims for Restitution and Repatriation of Objects

Alexander Herman, Director of the Institute of Art and Law UK, and author of the lucid book, The Parthenon Marbles Dispute: Heritage, Law, Politics(Hart/Bloomsbury 2023), will speak about how the British Museum relates to claims for restitution and repatriation of objects in its collection. The museum, established in 1753 by an Act of Parliament, was the first public national museum anywhere in the world tasked with keeping its collection together in perpetuity. This role has been challenged by countries claiming the return of certain objects, most notably Greece in relation to the Parthenon Marbles. This claim will be examined in great detail, and Alex will try to answer the question of what lies ahead. Are we destined to relive this agonizing dispute over and over again? He will also consider other controversies affecting the museum, such as the recent scandalous theft of 2,000 small Greco-Roman artifacts involving one of the institution’s own senior curators.
Alex’s writing appears regularly in The Art Newspaper and he has been quoted widely in the press on art law topics (including The Globe and Mail, The Guardian, The New York Times, The Economist, ArtNET). He trained in both common law and civil legal systems at McGill University and practiced law in Montreal. He is also program Co-director of the Art, Business, and Law LLM run in partnership with Queen Mary University of London.
