Sean Martindale, Artist Prize 2012
A daring new exhibit at Markham’s Industrial Arts, Face/Waste confronts the hidden toll of everyday trash. The exhibition unites 33 artists examining the often-ignored waste generated by their daily lives. Face/Waste was inspired by the artist duo Sean Martindale and JP King, who bring their own thought-provoking works to the exhibit. This exhibit is on until December 15. City of Markham’s Circulating Public Art Collection has recently acquired works by Maria Hupfield and Esmaa Mohamoud. This collection explores the theme of Urban Landscape—a cultural and social reflection that takes the multifaceted process of urbanization in Markham as its starting point. Camille Turner, Artist Prize 2018
Camille Turner’s work is part of the exhibition Estuaries, currently on display at The Owens Art Gallery at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick. This exhibition features artworks by both contemporary and historical artists, archival documents and artifacts, to contend with the tensions that arise once we allow the freshwater river of Canadian history to meet the ocean of Black Atlantic life. Alex Hatanaka, Artist Prize 2023
Alexa Kumiko Hatanaka’s, in case my mind [betrays] me, let me say one last thing, curated by Anne-Laure Lemaitre, marks Hatanaka’s first solo exhibition with Trotter & Sholer in New York City. This exhibition is an exploration of a personal experience with bipolar disorder. For more information, click here.
This month, Hatanaka is artist in residence in New York at the Bed Stuy Art Residency. Located in Bed Stuy Brooklyn, the Bed Stuy Art Residency provides artists with one-month windows for living and working, complete with a stipend to relieve some financial pressure during their stay.
